Ricardo Báez Salazar-Valentín’s life is a tale of rebellion, tragedy, ambition, and resignation to the weight of legacy. Born the second of five children, he grew up in the shadow of his "perfect" older brother, Adrián. Ricardo’s childhood was marked by his restless spirit, a penchant for trouble, and a family-imposed confinement to curb his unruliness. At 11, his actions indirectly led to a devastating fire that destroyed the family home, Pedazo de Casa, claiming several relatives, including Adrián. The incident left scars—both personal and shrouded in mystery.
His adolescence was a battle between his defiance and his family’s attempts to mold him. Sent to a preparatory school to separate him from an unsuitable romance, Ricardo eventually returned as the polished heir his parents demanded. As an adult, he excelled in business, leveraging cunning and ruthlessness to expand the Salazar family’s wealth and influence, though not without controversy. His leadership came with calculated sacrifices and buried scandals, all managed with a manipulative finesse he seemed to relish.
Ricardo’s personal life reflected his professional one: a façade of harmony masking deeper fractures. His marriage began as an arranged convenience and spiraled into strained coexistence, symbolized by his wife’s increasing absence. By 2017, Ricardo ascended as the Paterfamilias, fully assuming the family’s legacy. Yet, instead of dismantling the burdensome traditions he once despised, he upheld them, bound by their dark undercurrents and superstition. Despite lingering doubts about the supernatural origins of his family’s fortune, Ricardo chose not to challenge them, securing his place as a master of the game he once fought to escape.

Hard no for non-con/sexual assault. Okay to mentions of or in passing conversation. Would rather avoid descriptions, events, or trauma dumping about it.

Originating from Spain, the Salazar family settled in the region after Rudolfo Salazar struck copper in 1841. As a keystone to Red Harbor's start, they helped fund the build of some of the town's most prominent buildings. Exceptionally wealthy, fortunate, maybe a little too lucky with their business endeavors. Their name has dominated the harbor for a near two centuries, having started their export company of raw materials from the mines to the fish in the lake. Salazar Shipping is still around today as a wholesale fish export, having unified most of the local independent fisheries under their name, their fleet of boats pepper the waters.
A very private family used to stay mostly recluse to their historic family home, Pedazo de Casa, in the Hinterlands until 1985 when the house perished in a mysterious fire. Although relocated closer to town, the Salazars still tend to keep to themselves even if though they remain on good terms with the rest of the seven families. Unlike other families wrapped up in local scandals, Salazars have kept their hands clean and unproblematic for decades (with a few exceptions). Which only means they have twice as many skeletons buried in their closets, under the garden, and yards deep in the lake's cold black waters.
Salazar Shipping offers commercial transportation and export of local catch. Mostly dealing in fish, the company also offers freight service on some of their larger boats. Their fish is the main supply, fresh or canned, in local markets and restaurants.
While Ricky is the current de facto head of the family, the paterfamilias, he oversees the family's businesses while his brother handles local politics. Even there he leaves the brunt of the work on his underlings, only really weighing in on business deals and hammering out any issues that come up. He likes smooth sailing, he will personally ensure it. Like any Salazar before him, he has his hands in a lot of pots around town and along the coast, ensuring it's his supply is the only option. He's a pariah to those who partner with him and a thorn in the side for anyone who wants to remain independent. Don't be surprised if something magical happens to go wrong or catch on fire or go missing after turning down a lucrative offer.
